While many photographers believe that Twin Lens Reflex cameras were
mainly 6x6cm format, our Camera Library Pages
show that TLRs run the gamut from 35mm to giant view camera models such
as this "Mac Van 5x7 inch Twin Lens Reflex Camera" shown here.
The Mac-Van Manufacturing Corp. was active circa 1948, offering this unusual
5x7" studio twin lens reflex camera. Evidently this camera didn't sell well,
as it was their only model. The TLR features revolving backs and
parallax correction, and
offering reflex (mirror) or ground glass back viewing options. The lenses were
Ilex 8 1/2" f/4.5 Paragon lenses in an Ilex #4 (!) Universal shutter. You could
use 5x7" cut film or glass plates.
I was surprised to learn that such cameras often sell for ~$300+, suggesting there
is little interest by collectors or users (the #4 shutter is probably worth that!).
Still, very few of us have seen a 4x5" TLR, and I am intrigued to learn that you
could build up some unusual TLR collection examples for modest cost, ranging from
subminiature to this 5x7" monster TLR!
MAC VAN 5X7 TLR
This little monster has some serious flaws. Both the taking lens and shading hood are missing. Bellows are brittle and may not be light tight in some corners. Rear of the camera is covered with a 5x7 Fidelity film holder. Front of this otherwise ugly duckling flaunts a visually pleasing art Deco contrast.
