Medium Format Camera History

My understanding is that the Kaligar medium format SLR camera was simply an importer's name variant for the Kalimar MF SLR cameras. As shown in the photo, there were originally three screw thread lenses for this camera mount series - 52mm wide angle, 80mm normal lens, and 150mm telephoto lenses. See the Kalimar 660 and Kalimar Reflex pages for other later lenses and accessories.

These cameras were lower cost camera models from the early 1960s. Relatively few are in good user condition after all those years, especially if they were in heavy use. The contemporary Praktisix SLR cameras offered better quality Zeiss and Schneider lenses in a similar body design. The Bronica S and model C cameras had well regarded Nikkor lenses for little more money, along with the flexibility of a system camera (with removable backs and viewfinders). So these transitional Kalimar/Kaligar/Fujita medium format SLRs phased out by the mid-1960s.

So while these cameras have some historical interest, there are relatively few collectors - yet! That means prices are often low, but the cameras are often not in repairable or usable condition. Parts are an obvious problem. In short, while you may see some of these cameras at very attractive prices, be sure to check carefully for proper working before buying if you are looking for a user camera.
