This Ihagee folding plate camera (6x9cm) is an interesting example of a
medium format plate camera. Plate cameras used glass plates with emulsion
on one side. Various sizes of glass plates and corresponding camera formats were made
by Ihagee during the period from just prior to WWI to the start of WWII (c. 1939). The
6x9cm version shown typically sported a Tessar 105mm f/4.5 lens in a compur shutter. A
9x12cm glass plate version was also popular. As the photo notes show, a variety of other
lenses could also be found on various formats and models of such cameras.
Despite their age, you can often buy
these cameras for under $100. Unfortunately, the fact that they use glass plates instead
of more commonly available rollfilm makes them less attractive as potential user cameras.
