Folder Cameras FAQ

The Semi-Automatic Ansco from 1924 was a folding rollfilm camera with a difference. There was a spring wind advance mechanism which could be activated by a lever at the rear of the folder's drop bed. Reportedly, up to 10 shots could be made before having to wind. There were at least two models, one with the lever on the right, one with it on the left, for right and left handed folks. Nifty!

An Ansco Anastigmat f/7.5 130mm lens in an Ilex shutter was standard, but f/6.3 Anastigmat lenses were also produced (per a poster).

As you might expect, such an unusual feature camera commands a bit of collector interest, so expect to pay from $100 to $150 US and up, depending on condition.

McKeown's Camera Price Guide also notes that there is a related Automatic Ansco in which the winding mechanism is coupled to the shutter, unlike the Semi-automatic version shown here.
